ORLAND PARK, Ill. - July 8, 2015 - PRLog -- Ashley was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 6 months and was treated with chemotherapy until the age of three. At age 12, Ashley was diagnosed with Leukemia and has endured three bone marrow transplants.  Because of her illness, she has not been able to attend school or go through any of the normal milestones in life. Through it all she is  kind and caring with a love of art and creating.  She is requesting a blue room theme, that will contain art supplies, an easel and a huge school desk.

To help complete makeovers, Special Spaces depends on donations from individuals, local

businesses, groups and even other foundations.  Ashley’s makeover is sponsored by Joliet Township High School and Adventist Lab Partners. Joliet Township High School donated funds for the makeover that were raised during their annual fundraising fair. This is the second room sponsored by these  two groups.

The Chicagoland chapter of Special Spaces was founded by Naperville resident Kelly Knox in 2012.  Since its inception, over forty deserving children have gotten room makeovers. Knox has a full slate scheduled for 2015 and a waiting list is in place for many more children and families. Marlo Steinke, the new South Chapter director will be leading this makeover.  This is the south chapter’s second makeover.  The organization’s goal is to create dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening medical illnesses. The focus is answering one question: Where does a child go when battling a serious illness to find peace and comfort? A bedroom of course. According to Knox, “A bedroom to most kids is a personal space—a place that represents his or her unique personality. For a child with a critical illness who spends a lot of time at home in his or her room, that room should be a very special space. A place of comfort and refuge. A place that inspires and gives hope.”

The Chicagoland chapter has room makeovers scheduled on a monthly basis for children in need. Follow the progress on Facebook at “Special Spaces Chicagoland”.
