COOPER CITY, Fla. - July 6, 2015 - PRLog -- Meredeth Legg, a Library Media Specialist at Cooper City Elementary School, recently completed an intense, six-day immersion in American history at the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in Williamsburg, VA., thanks to the financial support of Sunrise-based BrightStar Credit Union. She was the only teacher from Florida to attend the program.

“Each day, I explored a different aspect of Colonial Williamsburg,” Legg said. “I am so grateful to BrightStar Credit Union for funding my learning experience, and I look forward to sharing my experience with Broward students, teachers and fellow media specialists.”

This is the 12th year that BrightStar Credit Union has sponsored 60 Broward County schools for the unique Colonial Williamsburg Foundation program, which gives schools special access to websites and electronic field trips that engage students by bringing technology to the classroom and encouraging virtual learning. The program fosters collaboration between students, who work together in learning about history in a technologically advanced environment. Some recent e-field trips that BrightStar has sponsored and participated in include Colonial Idol, Black History Month, Freedom of the Press and Treasure Keepers.

BrightStar’s financial sponsorship for Legg to attend the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute, gives Broward County teachers the opportunity to become a better resource for their students. Legg, who has taught at Cooper City Elementary School for 24 years, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Harding University and a Master’s degree in Reading from Florida International University.

Colonial Williamsburg builds on a nearly 60-year educational outreach tradition by exploring new technologies, expanding successful initiatives and offering new ventures to fulfill its mission. Now in its 26th year, Teacher Institute was developed to improve the quality of American history education in the nations’ schools and ensure that every student gains an understanding of the principles behind our system of government. Today, more than 8,100 teachers from all 50 states and three foreign countries have participated since the inception of the Teacher Institute.
