SAN FRANCISCO - July 5, 2015 - PRLog -- On July 11th and 12th, 2015, thousands of people will participate in the annual Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer in San Francisco, California. The route starts at Fort Mason, and then crosses the Golden Gate Bridge through Sausalito and Marin, then returns on the second day to Fort Mason.

Across the San Francisco Bay, local author, Helayne Waldman, has been raising money so she can donate copies of her best-selling book, The Whole-Food Guide for Breast Cancer Survivors, A Nutritional Approach to Preventing Recurrence, to as many walkers and breast cancer survivors as possible. It all began with an idea and a wish to honor a dear friend who died of cancer.

A Heart Touching Story of Hope

Helayne explains, “Last summer the EMCOR group in Connecticut contacted me to tell me that they were a sponsor for an ACS walkathon in Westport. They had decided that as part of their sponsorship package, they would buy 500 of my books to distribute to the walkers. When I saw that Avon was sponsoring a walkathon in San Francisco, I remembered what Emcor did and thought it would be wonderful if Avon would do the same. Unfortunately, they declined. So, I decided to purchase 15 books to donate myself. Then I sent an email and Facebook message to my list and asked if folks would like to contribute to a ‘Pay it Forward’ effort that would result in a significant number of breast cancer survivors receiving free copies of this important book.”

The first person to respond was Steve, an old friend from summer camp and the son of a woman who worked at the camp whom I loved very much and who I called ‘Aunt’ Edna. Steve sent a check for $500 (approximately 25 books) and we were off and running! I decided to donate the books in her memory and give new hope to cancer patients and survivors.”

An Integrative Approach to Rebuilding Health after Surviving Breast Cancer

Nutritionists, Functional Medicine Doctors and Integrative Oncologists believe that diet is important not just for reducing risk, but also for helping patients live with, and beyond cancer.

The Whole-Food Guide for Breast Cancer Survivors is on the top of my list of recommended reading that I share with patients I see in consultation,” remarks Donald J Abrams, M.D., Director of Integrative Oncology at UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine in San Francisco. “The relationship between nutrition and cancer is an area of great concern to the integrative oncologist, whose main focus is not on the cancer per se, but on the person living with the disease. Breast cancer survivors who may not have been as conscious of health nutrition prior to diagnosis will find this book to be an invaluable resource in the ensuing changes of their lives.”

Helayne and her associate Tiffany Hunter will give books out on July 12th at the closing ceremonies at Fort Mason.
