Sterlite Copper initiates desilting and cleaning of Peikulam Channel

THOOTHUKKUDI, India - July 4, 2015 - PRLog -- Sterlite Copper, a unit of Vedanta Limited has initiated desilting and cleaning work in Peikulam channel which is situated in the north main channel of Srivaikuntam Reservoir. The inauguration of the project was held at Shutter No. 1 at Thirupani Settikulam near Sebathaiyapuram today.

A special pooja was performed and the desilting and cleaning work was commenced in the presence of Mr M Kumaravendhan, Head - HSE, Sterlite Copper and Mr D Udhayasuriyan, Chairman, Tamiraparani Project Committee.

The channel starts Shutter No. 1 at Thirupani Settikulam and runs up to Shutter No.: 11 at Servakaran covering total distance of 6 kms. The water flow in the channel is slowed down due to excess weed growth and as a result, the farmers are unable to get the required quantity of water for irrigation.

By undertaking this work, there will be free flow of water in the channel which will benefit 25,000 farmers covering around 6,000 acres of agricultural land in and around Peikulam. The cleaning work is expected to be completed within 10 days.

Officer Bearers of Peikulam Farmers Association Mr Gunasekaran, President and Mr Murugesan, Secretary and Sterlite Copper officials Dr.R.Kailasam, Chief Medical Officer & Head - CSR, Mr M Esakkiappan, Head - Public Relations were present during the function.
