PM may extend time as public takes interest in selection of flag

BANGALORE, India - July 2, 2015 - PRLog -- Tuesday, June 30 was the last day for the general public to make submissions on the new flag.

After receiving a positive response to the campaign, Voreqe Bainimarama, the Prime Minister of

Fiji said that he would decide whether to extend the time for selection. “ I’ll make a decision

tomorrow on whether there will be an extension,” he said.

Over 2000 designs were received by the flag committee, out of which only 23 designs were

finalized. The citizens of Fiji were asked to give their opinion on the design they liked the most.

The committee said that the designs which were finalized represented the nation’s stature as an

independent and a modern one. And for the first time ever, Fiji will make laws for the protection

of the country’s flag.

A flag and the colours used in the flag represent the values of that country. Like the colour blue

in a flag represents freedom, justice, prosperity, peace, perseverance, patriotism and vigilance;

white represents for peace, innocence, purity and/or mountain snow, etc.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights have heard submissions

on the National Flag Protection Bill presented in the Parliament by Attorney – General, Aiyaz

Sayed – Khaiyum. The vote as well as debate over the Flag Protection Bill will happen next

month.

The new flag will be hoisted on Fiji Day in the month of October this year.
