CHATSWORTH, Calif. - July 1, 2015 - PRLog -- Many people spend up to 90% of their time indoors, so whether at home, work or school, it’s important that the indoor environment provides for a safe and healthy place for all building occupants.  In recent years, people have become increasingly aware of concerns associated with indoor exposure to such things as asbestos, lead-based paints and elevated levels of mold.

Another group of indoor pollutants has also begun to receive growing attention from many scientists and public health advocates.  These pollutants are a group of chemicals known as endocrine disruptors.  According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, “Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that may interfere with the body’s endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife.”

These substances can be either naturally occurring or man-made and people can be exposed to them in numerous ways.  A partial list of known and suspected endocrine disruptors includes:

·       Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

·       Bisphenol A (BPA)

·       Perchlorate

·       Phthalates

·       Dioxin and Dioxin-like Compounds

·       DDT

·       Fire Retardants

·       Arsenic

·       Cadmium

·       Lead

·       Mercury

“Many of these substances are believed to be endocrine disruptors and in some circumstances can be found in commercial and residential properties,” said Franco Seif, President of Clark Seif Clark (CSC).  “Some of these substances have been used in pesticides, herbicides, consumer products, pharmaceuticals and even as components to building materials, furnishings and other products. Simply breathing polluted air in a home or building or touching a surface could be all it takes to be exposed.”

The building science and indoor environmental quality professionals at CSC utilize advanced instrumentation and decades of experience to identify indoor pollutants to protect building occupants.  CSC also recently sponsored an educational video about endocrine disruptors and indoor exposure concerns that can be seen at: http://youtu.be/YLuXlOPRegU
