June 30, 2015 - PRLog -- The College of Business Administration’s Department of Accounting recognized Margie Connor, general counsel of Davey Tree, as the 2015 Accounting Alumni of the Year at the college’s awards ceremony at the Kent State Student Center.

Connor began her career at The Davey Tree Expert Company as a clerk in 1976. She earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a double major in accounting and business management in 1980, becoming an accountant at Davey Tree soon after. She was subsequently promoted to supervisor of internal reporting, manager of financial accounting and corporate internal auditor, while also passing the Certified Management Accounting (CMA) exam and the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam.

While working full-time as assistant controller, she attended the University of Akron School Of Law, graduating ninth in her class. After earning her law degree, she was promoted to manager of legal services and founded Davey Tree’s Legal Department. She was named officer and assistant secretary, and then general counsel.

In addition to her work at Davey Tree, Connor is a trustee and treasurer for The Portage Foundation, serves on the board for Robinson Memorial Hospital and is a past board member of Portage County United Way. In 2014 Connor was a finalist for Crain’s Cleveland Magazine for General Counsel of the Year by Crain’s Cleveland Business.

“Margie was selected as Accounting Alumni of the Year because of her long term and continuing commitment to Kent State University, the College of Business Administration and the Department of Accounting,” said Linda Zucca, chair of the department of accounting. “Her career accomplishments and work with charitable organizations serve as an example for our students.”

Connor joins Chris Chizmar of Deloitte; Robb Soles of KPMG; and Tim Michel of Rea & Associates as fellow Accounting Alumni of the Year honorees.

The winner is selected by a panel of accounting faculty based on the following: contributions to the accounting profession; involvement in Kent State University and  the College of Business Administration’s accounting program, as well as professional and career achievements.
