Monterra homes development leads Cooper City to #1 in growth in Florida over last 5 years

COOPER CITY, Fla. - June 28, 2015 - PRLog -- What happens when you decide to put a dairy farm up for sale and it turns into a residential development? In the case of the Waldrep Dairy Farm, Monterra Homes and Cooper City, you get the largest population growth of any city in Florida over the last 5 years, according to an estimate released by the U.S. Census Bureau last month.

In an article published in the Sun-Sentinel in May, growth in Cooper City from 2010 through 2014 was cited at 22 percent.  That number translates to this humble city suddenly leading the entire state of Florida in growth during that time frame. And it's all because of the last functional dairy farm in Broward County.

The owners of the 530-acre Waldrep Dairy Farm (grandchildren of the original owner, Wiley Waldrep, who died in 1997) sold it to developer TOUSA Homes in November of 2003. Cooper City then annexed the property from Broward County in 2004. And after a legal battle with Broward County ended in their favor in 2004, TOUSA Homes, under the DBA of Monterra Homes started development on the site. A total of 1,654 units, a mixture of single family homes, townhouses and apartments, have been built on that site over the last 10 years. Despite financial issues that have included a bankruptcy and other developers getting involved on certain sub-divisions of the project, it is now almost fully developed.
