SARASOTA, Fla. - June 25, 2015 - PRLog -- M David Shapiro a civil trial lawyer was featured as a guest columnist by the Sarasota Herald Tribune. Mr. Shapiro published a article on the newspaper's website that shined light on the dangers of larger use of prescription drugs as well as the greater responsibility that pharmacists are now legally accountable for.

In the article, Mr. Shapiro explains that a according to the Mayo Clinic, a staggering 70% of Americans now take some kind of prescription drug. While the vast majority of fulfilled scripts are trouble-free, errors in fulfilling medication now account for 1.3 million injuries and more than 7,000 deaths annually.

The article goes on to explain that in the past pharmacists were by enlarge protected from legal liability from prescription errors however, recent rulings by Florida courts and courts in other US states are  changing this precedent. As a result pharmacists are now shouldering more responsibility including legal liability. The article continues to on showing that something as simple as a physicians sloppy handwriting can lead to a serious or even deadly error in prescription, and pharmacists may need to keep a closer attention on other issues such as the frequency of medications or what other medications a patient may be taking.

Attorney M. David Shapiro also offered advice on a few simple ways to reduce the risk of getting the wrong prescription fulfilled as well as websites that allow for patients to identify that the drug they have been prescribed is what's in the bottle. The websites, which are listed in the article, show the correct color, shape and writing of the pills as one way of verifying the drug.
