Oak Therapeutics Enters Battle Against Malaria

Oxnard, CA – Oxnard-based pharmaceutical start-up Oak Therapeutics successfully concluded the pre-clinical phase of its anti-malarial medication Artelutrine™. Artelutrine™ is a reformulation of a highly effective, WHO-recommended combination therapy of the active ingredients Artemether and Lumefantrine using Oak Therapeutics novel delivery system, oral dissolvable strips (ODS).

Artelutrine™ ODS will be used in the treatment for children with malaria. Malaria is an infective disease that kills close to 700,000 people annually, most of them children under five years. Another 165 million annually contract malaria, which then constitutes a major burden on education systems due to student absences, causes employee absences, and ultimately impacts the entire economies in Africa, Asia and even parts of Central and South America.

In the pre-clinical trial, Oak Therapeutics proved that its ODS delivery system is as effectively delivering the drugs as the most well-known pediatric anti-malarial currently on the market. Oak Therapeutics is also developing other medications using their ODS delivery system including antibiotics for use in pediatric patients with compromised immune systems, anti-retroviral drugs for pediatric HIV patients, and pediatric oral rehydration supplements that are used in the treatment of diarrhea, one of the planet’s deadliest diseases.
