By: Honeybee Air Conditioning What are evaporation coolers? An evaporation cooler is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. Evaporative cooling differs from standard AC systems which use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. The cooling potential for evaporative cooling is dependent on the wet bulb depression, the difference between dry-bulb temperature and wet-bulb temperature. In arid climates, evaporative cooling can reduce energy consumption and total equipment for conditioning as an alternative to compressor-based cooling. In climates not considered arid, indirect evaporative cooling can still take advantage of the evaporative cooling process without increasing humidity. What do you need to consider before choosing an evaporation cooler? Evaporation coolers use less energy than other air conditioning systems and they can reduce outside air temperatures by 20 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. However, evaporation coolers do not reach the temperature an AC unit would. In our desert climate, this warmer temperature may lead to discomfort. If the cooler is installed on the roof, there is some roof deterioration caused by routine maintenance trips. Also, a sunlit rooftop cooler will be about 1°F less effective than a shaded cooler. Last, these units require a large opening in the wall or roof, which can be a security risk. Coolers also require windows to be left open, an additional security issue. At Honeybee AC, we can replace and maintain your AC unit plus answer any questions you may have. Call us today to schedule your appointment! End
