Joan Levy Bisesi Foundation Launches Innovative ‘Preceptor’ App

The Joan Levy Bisesi Foundation released a new mobile application that will connect dental professionals with cancer experts at the OSU James Cancer Hospital, making it easier than ever for them to pre-screen their patients for oral cancer.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - June 24, 2015 - PRLog -- Last month, the Joan Levy Bisesi Foundation for Head and Neck Oncology Research announced the launch of an exciting new mobile application aimed at making it easier than ever for dental professionals to pre-screen their patients for oral cancer. The application, called ‘Preceptor,’ connects dentists, hygienists and dental assistants with cancer experts at the Ohio State University’s James Cancer Hospital.

The Joan Levy Bisesi Foundation began developing ‘Preceptor’ in 2013, as a valuable new feature to be offered exclusively to members of their Dental Partnership. The application, which is now available for download in both the Apple and Android marketplaces, allows members to securely upload photos of suspicious sores or lesions in a patient’s mouth and have them analyzed by a cancer expert at the James Cancer Hospital within 48 hours.

Joan’s Foundation’s Dental Partnership is an integral part of the organization’s outreach efforts. They hope that the introduction of ‘Preceptor’ will encourage more dental professionals to join the partnership.

“Dental professionals are on the front line of defense against oral, head and neck cancers,” said Dee Bisesi-Merrick, board member for Joan’s Foundation. “By offering our members access to valuable resources, up-to-date information, continuing education courses, and appointment referrals, we hope to provide our members with the skills and tools they need to effectively screen and diagnose their patients for oral cancers.”

Joan’s Foundation had previously offered a similar feature on their website that allowed dental professionals to submit photos for review, but where the former program was lacking, ‘Preceptor’ excels.

“The concept of ‘Preceptor’ is really just a new take on an old idea,” Bisesi-Merrick said. “By integrating that old idea with new technology, we’ve been able to make significant improvements and create a tool that is incredibly valuable for our members.”

‘Preceptor’ is accessible from any Apple or Android phone or tablet, making it simple for Joan’s Foundation Dental Partnership members to snap photos and submit them for review. The new app also features better security and allows for members to submit new cases anonymously, in order to protect the privacy of their patients.

The application is available for download immediately. However, users must be members of the Joan Levy Bisesi Foundation’s Dental Partnership in order to login and access the ‘Preceptor’ interface. Dental professionals can register as members by visiting http://www.joansfoundation.org/for-dental-professionals/become-a-member/.
