KTM Roofing Provides Tips on Turning an Attic Into Usable Space

ATLANTA - June 23, 2015 - PRLog -- KTM Roofing, which has served Atlanta and its surrounding areas for 30 years, has released a series of tips to turn moderately-sized to large attics into usable spaces. These uses include turning the space into a guest bedroom, a home office or a children's playroom. The process of turning an attic into a space where people can sleep, spend time or work starts with regulating the heat that commonly escalates in the space during hot days and then bringing the temperature down to a comfortable level. The specific steps include:

· Insulating the roof/ceiling of the attic - This is the area where radiating heat from direct sunlight heats the space. The first step is to install a radiant heat barrier. These barriers are made of foil, easy to install and can prevent up to 90 percent of heat resulting from direct sun from entering the attic. The installation of insulation on the ceiling of the attic also regulates temperatures in the space, during both the warm days of summer and the cold of winter.

· Insulating the floor - Insulating the floor can prevent heat transfer from the home's interior to the attic, adding another means of regulating temperatures in the space. While the transfer of heat on cold days may be desirable, adding insulation allows for better overall control of temperatures in the space. Installing an attic tent can enhance insulation capabilities by limiting the transfer of heat through the areas surrounding doors and access points.

· Ventilating the space - Allowing warm air to escape out of vents placed along the ridge of the ceiling to then be replaced by pulling cooler air in through vents on the floor provides an efficient way to regulate temperatures in the attic while also preventing the space from getting stuffy. In an attic with a central high ridge, ventilation can be facilitated without using fans or powered vents.

· Adding a small air conditioner/heater - The addition of a small air conditioner/heater allows temperatures to be set at individuals' specific comfort levels. This can make the space usable throughout the year, regardless of how hot or cold it gets outside.

“Attics are often neglected, but they can be turned into extra space for a variety of uses with the installation of insulation, ventilation and temperature controls,” said Tim McLoughlin, President and Founder of KTM Roofing. He seconded, “The addition of usable square footage can also increase the value of a home.”
