Eventually, a material handling division was set up which fabricated a variety of carts and containers in fibre material as an alternative to the steel or wood containers then in wide use. Spaulding expanded into plastic molding in the late 50’s, entering into early rotational molding using the “open flame” method. In this process, molds were spun directly over open flames as the heat source. The process was slow and hard to control, but the division was heading in a new direction.
