HDB showcases space saving ideas for new homeowners

Innovative Furniture that makes space available for every budget

CENTRAL, Singapore - June 22, 2015 - PRLog -- With Singapore apartment sizes getting smaller, space is at a premium creating a growing demand for space-saving solutions.

Singapore-based Spaceman furniture has now teamed up with HDB, creating a range of mock-up show flats, with dozens of affordable and stylish ideas for new homeowners looking to make the most of their space.

The show flats, dubbed the “My Nice Home Gallery” are located at HDB Hub, Biz Four, 3rd storey 470 Lorong 6 Toa Payoh.

Launched in 2012 Spaceman offers a growing range of Italian-designed and made furniture, all produced with the purpose of making maximum use of smaller spaces.

“Smart designs using the latest technology and materials are transforming small spaces into airy, comfortable places to live and work,” says Matt Levin, founder and director of Spaceman.

“We see many first time homeowners collect their keys, having planned out their space and they realise conventional furniture simply doesn’t fit. By incorporating space saving design right at the outset, developers, architects, and home owners can make living in smaller spaces much more comfortable without compromise”.

Spaceman’s space-saving furniture covers living, sleeping as well as office situations, and even includes ultra-compact kitchens.

Spaceman has always eschewed the idea that high quality space saving furniture has to be a premium priced product, but in recognition of its tie up with HDB Spaceman has introduced a range of quality lower cost products, aimed at fitting within the budgets of first-time home owners.

So in addition to its best-selling range of multi-function beds and tables, Spaceman now also has the most affordable wall bed on the market in the form of their “Economy wall beds” range.

“We welcome this exciting alliance with HDB to educate home buyers about how useful and relevant space saving furniture is to Singapore homes” says Spaceman’s Matt Levin.

“Our ethos is to offer affordable space saving furniture that balances style with function to offer innovative elegant solutions to Singapore's space crunch.”

In context:

Space is not only an issue for new condo buyers. The majority of Singaporeans stay in their first HDB whilst their growing family fills the space, six in ten owners still live in their first HDB. As National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan wrote in his blog "Our first HDB flat is where we build our family, bring up our children” yet in modern HDB apartments how do we create that extra space as children grow, later get married and move in with their husband or wife, and two or three generations compete for limited space under one roof ?

With total debt servicing ratio and acute price pressure driving down budgets and higher land, construction and raw material costs condo developers are choosing to make more smaller size units.

The average condo size reduced by 37% over 5 years[1] (http://#_ftn1), and even Executive Condos have shrunk by nearly 20% since 2010[2] (http://#_ftn2). This trend has continued in 2015, “In the Outside Central Region (OCR) and Core Central Region (CCR), there has been a marked increase from 14 to 17 percent and from 53 to 57 percent for condos 800 square feet and less”[3] (http://#_ftn3)

New formats such as Dual Key, and SOHO apartments also call for a new way of thinking about how we use our space.

To address these shrinking spaces Spaceman was established to specialise exclusively in space saving furniture design, from wall beds to multi function tables. This is an area that according to the respected TRENDWATCHING[4] (http://#_ftn4) is a top consumer trend.

Space saving design’s importance was even recognised by the furniture industry, at Singapore’s premier furniture fair – IFFS – in March 2015 - Spaceman won the award for best bedroom furniture.

ABOUT SPACEMAN:
Spaceman launched in Singapore in 2012 driven by the realization that whilst homes are evolving furniture is not. The advent of smaller home sizes, as well as Soho, Dual Key and other new formats brings the need for furniture designed for those spaces.

Spaceman is the first company in Singapore to specialise 100% in a broad range of European made space saving designs in the form of beds, tables and sofas.

Luxe wall beds
Spaceman’s market leading wall beds with soft open safety system, and 68 finishes, are available in a cabinet and can be combined with sofa, desk, shelves or even a TV console.  Made in Italy in single, super single, double, queen size both vertically or horizontally opening.

Economy wall beds
The Economy wall beds, also made in Europe, are a new type of bed, a wall bed system that is completely standalone so the bed can be used with or without a cabinet, and can be fixed to either the wall or the floor. They can even be placed inside an existing wardrobe or simply behind a curtain.

This enables Spaceman to offer a super low cost wall bed so there is a solution for every budget. After all saving space shouldn't cost the earth.

Multi function tables
Dining tables hog space but are rarely used in many households.  Spaceman offers a range of dining tables that function as chic coffee or console tables when not required as a dining table, thus saving space, and with one piece performing multiple functions, also saving money.

Spaceman @ HDB
With a focus on maximizing home space, HDB have installed Spaceman beds into the show flats at HDB Hub at Toa Payoh which were recently relaunched as “My Nice Home Gallery”. With a number of space saving ideas the show flats show HDB buyers how to use innovative furniture design to make the most of the space they have.

“Designed in collaboration with interior designers and furniture manufacturers, the show flats feature creative design and furnishing ideas that offer home owners greater choice and flexibility in customising their flat to suit their lifestyle. The HDB-industry collaboration also enables the home furnishing and interior design industry to have a deeper appreciation of the latest designs and layout of HDB flats, and the type of furniture that would optimize the design features of the flat.”[5] (http://#_ftn5)

Each Spaceman bed is accompanied by a visual display to show how the room benefits from the additional space when the bed is closed and there are images also contained within the digital kiosks situated around the site.
