CLEARWATER, Fla. - June 21, 2015 - PRLog -- New York Times bestselling author, Dave Wolverton, delivered Clearwater’s first-ever Writers of the Future Writer’s Workshop to over 130 attendees in the historic Fort Harrison Crystal Ballroom earlier this month.

The 5-hour workshop was modeled on the workshop delivered to winners of the Writers of the Future contest. This contest was established by international bestselling author L. Ron Hubbard in 1983 to help launch new writers in the field of Science Fiction and Fantasy and has grown to become the largest speculative fiction writing contest in the world.

Wolverton, also Coordinating Judge, Editor and First Reader for Writers of the Future since 1991, drew on essays and articles written by author Algis Budrys and L. Ron Hubbard. These provided fundamentals on writing, including: the seven parts of a perfect story, “single draft” writing, and how to build suspense. This was followed by practical exercises for attendees to drill their new tools with immediate application.

One exercise called for students to talk to a stranger, find out something about their past or current life that sparked a story idea for them, and draft this onto a 3”x5” card — all within 10 minutes.

Quoting Mr. Hubbard from his mission statement that initiated the Writers of the Future Contest 32 years ago, “A culture is as rich and capable of surviving as it has imaginative artists,” Wolverton—who earlier had novelized L. Ron Hubbard’s screenplay into the New York Times bestselling novel “A Very Strange Trip”—also shared tips and anecdotes from his 28-year writing, editing and judging career.

Feedback from the workshop, from both novice as well as accomplished writers, validated the effectiveness of Wolverton’s efforts. “As a result of this workshop I have 50 short stories I should write, that is my plan. Some will be fiction, some real life.”

The following day the Fort Harrison hosted 300 people for a Writers and Illustrators of the Future event giving the history and growth of the contest. The event was capped by a live theatrical performance of one of L. Ron Hubbard’s classic science fiction stories, “When Shadows Fall.”
