WASHINGTON - June 19, 2015 - PRLog -- In the wake of the murders of nine people  at Mother Emauel AME Church in Charleson, South Carolina, Melanie Campbell, President and CEO of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation which represents more than 40 million people through 35 organizations issued the following statement.

Campbell also was part of a delegation sent by President  Barack Obama to Charleston yesterday on Air Force One.

"The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation and the Black Women's Roundtable stand in solidarity with brothers and sisters of all races, ethnic groups and religions across the country in offering our condolences to the families of the victims of the heinous Charleston Massacre at the Emanuel AME Church Wednesday night. Racial hatred and gun violence continues to play a devastating role in what has become an all too regular occurrence in the United States. This time the victims were nine people who had come together in worship.

The hate mongering by those who seek fame or political fortune must come to an end. The real consequences of their devastating vicious words in part inspires these senseless acts of violence. It is time for thoughtful and true discussion on healing race relations and it is vital for our elected leaders to pass meaningful gun safety laws on a national and state level to end the senseless killings of innocent people in our nation."

The National Coalition, founded in 1976, creates and enlightens communities by building institutional capacity that provides and develops leadership. By educating, motivating, organizing, and mobilizing Black communities, the National Coalition seeks to encourage full participation in a barrier-free democratic process. The National Coalition works to expand, strengthen, and empower communities to make voting and civic participation a cultural responsibility and tradition.   The Black Women's Roundtable (BWR) serves as the women and girls empowerment arm of The National Coalition. BWR promotes health and wellness, economic security and sustainability, education and global empowerment.
