By: Community Foundation The Award annually recognizes a nonprofit that reflects Mr. Huegli’s vision, high standards in human services programming and belief in human potential. Huegli served in the region’s human services sector for nearly half a century before his death in 1988. Founded in 1975, HAVEN is Oakland County’s only agency dedicated to the treatment and prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault. It also provides shelter, advocacy and educational programming to nearly 30,000 people each year at multiple sites. As part of the award, HAVEN will receive a one-time grant of $5,000 to support general operations. In 2014, HAVEN was the first organization ever to receive a 100% Quality Assurance Review score from the Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board. Currently, HAVEN is expanding its services through a new facility in Pontiac that will consolidate forensic exam sites, shelter and counseling center under one roof. In addition, it will provide room for additional on-site supportive services. “On behalf of HAVEN, I accept the Richard F. Huegli Award for Program Excellence," Mariam C. Noland, president of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, said “Richard F. Huegli possessed a combination of concern for people’s needs, innovation and professional dedication. HAVEN’s staff and supporters embody these values everyday in their work with people affected by domestic violence. We are pleased to honor them this year.” Richard F. Huegli was an integral figure in the region’s human services sector, spending 42 years with United Community Services of Metropolitan Detroit, now part of the United Way for Southeastern Michigan. He later helped to establish the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and served as the Foundation’s acting director in its first year of existence. The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan is a permanent community endowment built by gifts from thousands of individuals and organizations committed to the future of southeast Michigan. The Foundation works to improve the region’s quality of life by connecting those who care with causes that matter. The Foundation supports a wide variety of activities benefiting education, arts and culture, health, human services, community development and civic affairs. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed more than $700 million through more than 52,000 grants to nonprofit organizations throughout Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, Washtenaw, St. Clair and Livingston counties.
