Dave Ross Receives SWANA’s Robert L. Lawrence Distinguished Service Award

LONG BEACH, Calif. - June 17, 2015 - PRLog -- The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) has recognized David (Dave) Ross, P.E., BCEE, retired Senior Vice President of SCS Engineers, for his life-long contributions to solid waste management. SWANA honored Mr. Ross this week with The Robert L. Lawrence Distinguished Service Award, given to those who demonstrate meritorious consideration through service to the solid waste profession throughout the course of their careers.

Dave devoted his 46-year professional environmental engineering career to designing and building environmentally-sound solutions for the solid waste management industry, and is well-known for sharing his knowledge and innovative practices within SWANA.  He was also a long-time member of SWANA’s Scholarship Committee which evaluates and recommends scholarship awards to students who study solid waste issues.

During his 43-year career at SCS, Dave Ross conducted hundreds of projects in the United States and internationally. These projects involved a wide range of environmental and economic facets inherent in landfill management, solid and hazardous waste management, and energy from waste, including the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) early studies of landfills, oily wastes, and recycling, which formed the foundation of many federal and state regulations in place today.   After serving as director of SCS’s Long Beach office and manager of the company’s western region Dave assumed responsibility for SCS’s international practice, where he applied USA waste management technology in more than 40 developed and developing countries.

“There’s no better career cap than to be recognized by my peers with this Award,” says Dave.  “It’s particularly humbling to consider that I may be one of the few current members of SWANA who had the opportunity to meet and even work a bit with Robert L. Lawrence himself, starting with participation at a GRCDA (now SWANA, of course) meeting in San Jose, California, in 1969.”

Dave, who retired as a Senior Vice President of SCS Engineers in 2014, served on SCS’s Board of Directors, and helped grow the company. He is a Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, served on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Solid Waste Forum for 20 years, and since 2008 continues to serve as one of seven Associate Editors of “Waste Management & Research,” the peer-reviewed journal of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), of which SWANA is a member organization.
