Orthodontists Provide the Best in Smile Correction

With more dentists offering orthodontic options, it’s important patients understand why they should visit an orthodontist to correct their smiles.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - June 16, 2015 - PRLog -- Vancouver, BC – If you’re looking for a straighter smile, you might think it easiest to simply have your orthodontic work performed in your dentist’s office. After all, your dentist is well-trained, knows the issues you face, and you won’t have to get used to a new office. Right?

Orthodontists will tell you this is wrong, and for good reason. While dentists are, in fact, very well-trained, only an orthodontist has the unique educational and hands-on experience you need to get the perfect smile.

Dentists and orthodontists both start off in the same place – dental school. But once that general dentistry school is complete, a general dentist can begin treating patients. An orthodontist, however, continues his or her education for an additional two to three years following dental school.

After graduating from an accredited dental school, an orthodontist attends an orthodontic specialty program, where he or she earns the specialty degree. These programs include classroom work, combined with research and clinical work.

The important thing about this additional education is what the orthodontist studies. While dentists are well-trained to handle any general dentistry issues that may arise, only an orthodontist has the advanced training and knowledge to understand craniofacial anatomy and orthodontic theory.

But what does that mean to you? Quite simply, it means that only an orthodontist will have the unique knowledge to correct any orthodontic issue you may have.

You may have noticed and increase in dentists offering services such as Invisalign in their offices. Invisalign is a wonderful technology that has provided beautifully straight smiles for countless patients. However, it’s not a one size fits all orthodontic solution.

For some patients, Invisalign may seem like a dream solution – it’s invisible, removable and will have little impact on your daily life. But, it just isn’t the ideal option for a number of orthodontic patients. For more complex cases, standard braces(http://www.vancouverorthodontics.com/self-ligating-braces...) are still the gold standard. They can most efficiently move teeth that are grossly misaligned, leaving you with a perfectly functional smile.

And that is always the goal of orthodontics – to create not just a beautiful smile, but a functional one as well. A dentist can help maintain your oral health, but only an orthodontist should handle correcting your smile. Your orthodontist will have all the tools and technology needed to have you smiling bigger than ever.
