New Care Labeling Symbols Introduced for Textiles on Japanese Market

The Consumer Affairs Agency, Government of Japan announced a new care labeling standard (JIS L0001-2014) on March 31, 2015 to replace the current JIS L0217-1995.

June 16, 2015 - PRLog -- List of Textile Care Symbols Expanded

The new JIS L0001-2014 “Textiles – Care Labeling Code Using Symbols”2 increases the care symbols from 22 (JIS L0217-1995) to 41 symbols. The expanded list will provide consumers with more detailed information on awareness of the method and cost of caring for textile products when they are making purchases. JIS L0001-2014 is harmonized with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 3758:2012 “Textile – Care Labeling Code Using Symbols.” The new standard is regulated under the Household Products Quality Labeling Law and will become effective on December 1, 2016.

Standard JIS L0001-2014 Provides More Information to Consumers

The care information must be permanently attached to the textile product, either printed directly on the product or on a sewn in label.  The label must be visible, indelible and easily accessible to the consumer. The new standard contains 5 basic textile care symbols in the order of washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care treatments of dry and wet cleaning, and also a number of additional symbols. The care instructions must be expressed mainly in terms of symbols. Words may be used to supplement the symbols in cases where they are needed.

Once the implementation of the new standard is effective, textile products must be labeled with care symbols according to the JIS L001-2014 in order to be accepted on the Japanese market.

Examples of care symbols to be displayed after modification are summarized in a table within the latest SGS SafeGuards bulletin, as well a further information about the main amendment for the new labeling standard JIS L0001-2014.
