East Coast Labs First In Region To Achieve ISO/IEC 17025 and CAN 9009 Certification

East Coast Labs becomes the first medical cannabis testing lab in New England to achieve both ISO 17025 and CAN 9009 quality certification

June 15, 2015 - PRLog -- New York, NY – The American Board of Accredited Certifications (ABAC™) announced today it has approved Rhode Island based East Coast Labs (ECL) for both ISO/IEC 17025 and CAN 9009 certification making the company the first cannabis testing lab in New England to achieve such recognition. According to ABAC™ spokesperson James Davidson, East Coast Labs passed all requirements set forth by ISO/IEC 17025:2005, the world's leading standard for testing and calibration laboratories which specifies the requirements for the labs to carry out tests and/or calibrations, including sampling using standard methods, non-standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods. Davidson said East Coast Labs also achieved CAN 9009, the nation's first and only officially accredited quality assurance program for the medical marijuana and legalized recreational cannabis industry.

“Test labs have and always will be a vital part of all cannabis operations, and there is a critical need for accurate test lab certification of potency and content that is consistent and accurately reproducible over time,” said Davidson. He added, “With so many labs opening up in medical cannabis states around the country, there has been a great pressure to 'fudge' or inflate the test numbers in an upward direction because of the profitability associated with higher percentages. Inflating test numbers can also mean that edibles made from products with inflated numbers will be far less potent than expected and results in very unhappy clients as well as misleading dosages and prices across the country.”

Daryl Guberman, CEO of G-PMC Registrars, the fully accredited certification body (CB) that oversees East Coast Labs quality management system said inevitably, third-party (government) regulation or voluntary (ISO and CAN) compliance will be necessary for labs and extract/medibles companies to work together in a manner that is credible and scientifically accurate so that consumers are not being misled on the proper dosage or strength of the medicine or cannabis product they are using. “The multi-million dollar labs are often the culprit of inflating numbers to increase profits, and in return delivering inconsistent test results that can have long-term viability in the marketplace, said Guberman, a quality expert for 30+ years. He concluded, “Often, these “mega labs” have to resort to hustling extracts in order to make a profit which becomes a conflict of interest to the community. For this reason CAN 9009 is absolutely essential for cannabis testing labs, and in many cases mandatory.”
