When it’s a part of the vehicle, it can customize the overall look and feel of the user experience. It can fully support brand attributes and utilize the full strength of the technology to allow voice commands and native controls. With Toyota’s engagement with the technology, it serves as validation for Ford that the experience Ford creates for the driver is one to replicate. The technology is practical and useful, and other members of the industry are looking into it. The goal of the SDL and AppLink projects is to drive the growth of the automotive app developer community and help the auto industry maintain an innovative community focused on improvement. Open source software should create a differentiation of connectivity and navigation systems. To the consumer, this will mean a greater amount of choice when it comes to connecting and controlling their smartphones with their vehicles. This in turn will spur the growth of the automotive developer community as they create broad-reaching apps to serve these customers. The project SDL was branded as AppLink by Ford, and was rolled out with great success. More than 5 million vehicles are employing this technology, and the vehicles are spread all over the world. Cars in North and South America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific region all feature this interfacing program. Soon, three new markets will get to experience it—Thailand, New Zealand, and Taiwan.
