LOS ANGELES - June 10, 2015 - PRLog -- ‘Music As Medicine’, is a campaign with an agenda to educate the public about Music Therapy and the healing properties of music for those suffering from Mental Illness, as well as raise funds for various non-profit music organizations. The parties involved include ‘Electronic Music Alliance' (www.ema-global.org) - An organization created by Janine and Ken Jordan (The Crystal Method) with a goal to activate social change programs, which are important to the EDM community and the upcoming Music Therapy/DJ documentary ‘Before We Were Kings’ (www.beforewewerekings.com), which stars EDM artist Moby, Wolfgang Gartner, Sander Kleinenberg and many others. The campaign will involve multiple initiatives including Social Media outreach, media appearances (TV, Radio, Magazine) by the campaign’s partnering organizations as well as stars of the documentary, contest, and events centered around World Mental Health Day - October 10th, 2015.

According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (http://nami.org), approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. (43.7 mill.) experience a mental illness in a given year and 23% of youth 13-18 experience a serious mental illness in a given year. Currently, the most common treatment for a mental illness is the prescription of a psychiatric drug. Many of these drugs do help improve symptoms, but they also have the potential of leaving patients in an unfunctional state after use. The point of this campaign is not to attack the psychiatric industry, but to suggest a treatment which is known to naturally increase the “happy” chemicals in one’s brain. One of the most common mental illness in America is Depression and since music has been scientifically proven to increase brain chemicals such as Dopamine, Serotonin, Oxytocin, and Endorphins; which help alleviate symptoms of Depression, the organizers felt a campaign such as this is long overdue.

The conversation about Music Therapy and music as therapy is generating buzz in the U.S., especially with the recent success of the Oscar winner ‘The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life” and the Sundance Audience Award winner ‘Alive Inside’. Brandon Ross, who is one Producers for ‘Before We Were Kings’, says “A campaign such as this, has the ability to spark a conversation around the world and help those who are looking for more alternative methods to help treat mental illness. One of the key initiatives of ‘Music As Medicine’ will be to start a hashtag campaign on World Mental Health Day. The goal will be to see influential music artist, organizations, mental health specialist and general influencers use #MusicAsMedicine on their social media platforms that day, to help raise awareness about the campaign’s cause.

The ‘Music As Medicine’ campaign officially launches in Las Vegas, NV the weekend of Electric Daisy Carnival (June 19th-21st) with in-person appearances and live performances from DJs who appear in ‘Before We Were Kings’.
