Couture's Skin Cancer Prevention Tips

Summer is here and everyone should know the basics of skin cancer as well as how to prevent it.

EXTON, Pa. - June 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. About 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in this country each year. Melanoma, a more dangerous type of skin cancer, will account for more than 73,000 cases of skin cancer in 2015.

An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Avoid the sun, especially between 10 am and 4 pm, and don’t use sun lamps or tanning beds. Always use sunscreen and lip balm with UVB and UVA protection with SPF 30 or SPF 50 if going out into higher heat, even on cloudy days. Wear sunglasses that have been treated to absorb UV radiation, a wide brim hat, and clothing made of tightly woven material with long sleeves. Protect children from the sun. Childhood sunburns may increase the risk of melanoma later in life.

Check your skin once a month and report any changes to your primary care doctor. If there are questionable areas it would be best to schedule a skin check with a dermatologist. Many services and products are available to help repair, resurface and freshen your skin but prevention is the best way to keep a youthful and fresh look.
