Follow on Google News | 2015 “Legends in Literacy” Recipients ChosenBy: myON myON (http://www.myon.com) The “Legends in Literacy” awards were designed to recognize one individual and one team for their work and commitment to literacy while demonstrating leadership in reading improvement as well as best practices that involve the community to encourage widespread reading within their schools and community as a whole. “We were overwhelmed and overjoyed with the number of responses we received for the Legends in Literacy Awards this year,” said myON president Todd Brekhus. “Each and every entrant is a literacy legend in their own right, and all of us at myON would like to thank each of you as well as congratulate this year’s winners for all your hard work to foster a love of reading in our schools.” This year’s recipients were chosen from a field of many outstanding entries; Individual winner: Dr. Frances Gonzales-Garcia, Reading Specialist at Leon Springs Elementary School Several elementary students from grades 3-5 that share the same passion and vision towards literacy, dubbing themselves as the iRead Club, support Dr. Gonzalez-Garcia’ Quote: "As an adult, I learned that both my father, a professional athlete, and my grandmother, fell victim to illiteracy; essentially the education system had failed them. I made it my life's mission to ensure this never happened to another child," commented Dr. Gonzales-Garcia. "The iRead Initiative has been just as rewarding for me personally as it has been for each of the kiddos that participate. They work so hard and are so dedicated to literacy for all. It warms my heart. Thank you for this honor- these students truly are the 'Legends in Literacy'." Group winner: Gainesville City School System Learning Supports District Group’s Read and Rise Program In it's 3rd year, the Read and Rise program is a unique partnership between Gainesville City Schools and the Gainesville Housing Authority aimed at providing opportunities to increase student achievement in reading. Led by Jarod Anderson and his team, Read and Rise affords the families of these students tools to help their children read at home and support to become more involved in their child's learning. Because of the programs overwhelming success, the district has expanded the reach of Read and Rise year over year. "The Read and Rise program has played an instrumental part in helping us to connect with our parents in a simplistic, meaningful, and impactful way,” stated Anderson. “Through Read and Rise, we are able to teach parents simple learning strategies that they can go home and utilize with their children. As a result, the relationship among the school, parent, and child is strengthened in such a way to improve outcomes for children before they start school. Read and Rise is a win win for everyone."
