Yellow Peril Gallery to present Ruth Dealy and Rodrigo Nava at ArtHamptons 2015

Debut of self-portraits and landscapes by Ruth Dealy and a large scale sculpture installation by Rodrigo Nava on the Private Estate Grounds

June 9, 2015 - PRLog -- Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to debut self-portraits and landscapes by Ruth Dealy and “Expansions”, a large scale sculpture installation by Rodrigo Nava on the Private Estate Grounds at ArtHamptons 2015.

A recipient of several grants and awards, including the coveted Pell Award for Excellence in the Arts, Ruth Dealy is interested in the tension between what is seen and what is felt.  Her paintings, both self-portraits and landscapes, are “meditations on ways of seeing and reproducing that seeing, not exactly, but honestly.”

Dealy is one of a group of Rhode Island artists – including Harry Callahan, Stephan Brigidi, Richard Fleishner, Malcolm Grear, Bunny Harvey, Aaron Siskind, Hugh Townley, and Dale Chihuly – who became known as The Rhode Island School based on their emergence in the 1970s as artists from Rhode Island School of Design.

The Pérez Art Museum Miami recently acquired “Morning After” (1974), a seminal painting in Dealy’s emergence as an artist.  “I was truly leaving my younger identity to walk the long and (I was afraid) lonely road of the artist,” she reveals.  “Now, forty-one years later, I am so grateful for that moment, and it still resonates as if it were today. That awakening has led me on a long walk through a dense woods to an opening in the field.”

On the Private Estate Grounds, Rodrigo Nava will present “Expansions”, a large scale sculpture installation derived from explosive-forming techniques that create a narrative of conversation between artist and process. Each sculpture exists as a visual embodiment of the exact moment when the work left the artist’s hand and became altered by the artist’s process.

“My work is rooted in a continual exploration of form as well as a commitment to process-oriented art. My most recent series consists of large closed steel forms that are expanded using a controlled explosion. This series is the result of a persistent need to continue the dialogue of contemporary sculpture,” Nava remarks about the Expansions series.  “In order to do this, I have developed a unique and new process that allows me to create non representational sculptures that are the pure authentic result of the relationship between material, process, artists and viewer. When I expand my work, I am attempting to dismantle my tie to an object by allowing it to become its own object. These are not sculpture fabricated to look like they are ‘inflated’. They are the remnants of a real experience.”

Nava received an award for the Expansions series from the Vermont Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts in 2013 and 2014.  He has a collection of works currently on view at Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Vermont.

The 8th edition of ArtHamptons, the Original Art Fair of the Hamptons, opens to the public on Friday, June 3; Opening Night Preview will be on Thursday, July 2.  Yellow Peril Gallery will present paintings by Ruth Dealy and small scale sculptures by Rodrigo Nava in Booth 300.  Nava’s large scale sculpture installation will be on the Private Estate Grounds.  This is the Providence-based contemporary art gallery’s first international art fair appearance in the Hamptons.
