Incorporated on July 19, 1949, with a population of 3,000, Northlake’s name is derived from its two major thoroughfares: Many of the initial residents worked at a nearby defense plant as the nation was gripped by war. They had “shell homes” that needed work on the weekends to complete and they did their own carpentry, plumbing and wiring, truly representative of that hard-working generation. In many ways, Northlake’s motto, “City of Friendly People,” rings as true today as it did in decades past. In many other ways, Northlake’s motto should be “City of Hard-Working People.” Highlights of Northlake include: Farmland, Shell Homes, and a Golf Course From Shell Homes to Incorporation Northlake Days, Parades, and Floats Religious Life A Great Education Moving Forward in Changing Times Join the author for a signing: Where: Costco 8400 W North Ave., Melrose Park IL 60160 When: Friday, June 12th, 2015; 1:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
