A Serene Bathroom with a Japanese Touch by a Hamden Design Firm Received a Design Award

HAMDEN, Conn. - June 4, 2015 - PRLog -- Penguin Environmental Design L.L.C., Hamden, CT, won second place of the 2015 CTC&G Innovation in Design Awards for the category of bath design. The prize was awarded for its “A Window to the Serenity” project.

This newly renovated master bathroom was created to respond to homeowners’ desire to have a space that reminds them their trip to Japan within their colonial house in Norwalk.

Everything about this bathroom, its elements, colors, textures, and their composition, is intended to bring the serenity and simplicity to the space.

At its center, tall Shoji screens are placed as a window through which homeowners can recall their memory. With softened sunlight coming through them, they re-experience the serenity they felt in Japanese temples and gardens. The entrance from the master bedroom is a pair of wide sliding doors. Sliding out the doors and then shoji screens brings the nature to the bathroom and to the bedroom, truly connecting the outside and inside.

The space is organized to avoid the hectic. Shoji, a tub, and doors separate two sets of a vanity and a shower. To visually connect the two sets and to “float” vanity countertops, the bathtub and lower parts of vanities are integrated as a single base. Two-tone colors, dark-brown and white, and their geometrical composition enhance the simplicity of the space. Yet the contrast is far from stark, softened by a variety of material textures.

Now to this serene space, homeowners walk in everyday to remember the beauty and calm of Japanese landscape, and sometime to meditate.
