Michigan’s First and Only Master Sand Sculpting Competition and State Championships!

Port Huron Michigan – May 29, 2015 – After two successful years; The Sand Lovers, a professional sand sculpting company based in Florida has again teamed up with the Port Huron Museum and Friends of the Fort Gratiot Light to host Michigan’s only Master and Advanced Amateur Sand Sculpting competition.

USA Today listed the event as one of the 10 best sand sculpting competitions. Fathom Way Travel highlighted the event as one of the nation’s best.

On June 30th, Master Sand Sculptors from as far away as Quebec, Washington and Prince Edward Island begin arriving in Michigan to compete in the 3rd annual Blue Water SandFest opening on July 3rd. Tourists and residents will have the unique opportunity to see some amazing art from just sand and water.

The Blue Water SandFest is the Michigan Sand Sculpting State Championships. The winners of each Division (Masters, Advanced Amateurs and Amateurs) will become this year’s 2015 State Champion.

The event will be 3 days long from July 3rd to July 5th on the shores of Lake Huron, in the shadows of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse (the oldest lighthouse in Michigan).  This is a remarkable opportunity to see some of the world’s top Master Sand Sculptors. Several of the competing Master Sculptors are World Champions, with each of them holding dozens of championship medals from competitions around the world. They are truly “World Class Sculptors”.

Along with the Masters Division an Advanced Amateur contest is also scheduled during the event. Advanced Amateurs will compete for the “Michigan State Championship Title” and the opportunity to move up to the Masters Level.

The first year we had 140 tons of sand, this year we will have 400 tons….increasing both the size and number of sand sculptures”; said Bill Knight of the Sand Lovers.

An Amateur contest is scheduled for Saturday July 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Amateur contest is intended as a venue for beginning or advanced amateurs and is open to everyone except masters and professionals.

Quick Sand Speed Sand Sculpting Show© - Is an audience-participation show in which two sculptors go head-to-head for a ten-minute sculpting competition, sculpting a subject selected by someone in the audience and. The winner of each round advances to championship rounds based on audience applause. Truly, a MUST SEE!

Want to try sand sculpting and learn from a professional? Along with demonstrations, The Sand Lovers will be providing hands-on lessons during the event. There will also be a Kids Zone for the kids to play in the sand and build their own master pieces.

This year the event is hosting a Special Saturday Evening Concert featuring Nashville Recording Artist Alan Turner and the Steel Horse band, with special guests Canadian Recording Artist Nick Beauregard and local favorites Brothers in Arms. The event will be open daily Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday 10:00a.m. to 4:00p.m.

Tickets for the event are just $5.00 per person and kids under 4 are free.
The public is welcome to come on Wednesday and Thursday to watch the creation of the 100 ton welcome sculpture for free.

Originally from Michigan, Bill and Marianne Knight own and operate The Sand Lovers. They have lived in Florida for the past 14 years. “We are excited to continue bringing this level of Sand Sculpting to Michigan and at the same time help preserve some of Michigan’s history”; said Marianne. The Sand Lovers not only create beautiful works of art from piles of sand; they manage some of the largest sand sculpting competitions in the United States.

All proceeds raised from Blue Water SandFest will be used for the renovation and restoration of the historic buildings and grounds of the Fort Gratiot Light Station County Park.
