Free One-Year Membership for 8th Graders at Miller YMCA Begins June 15

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. - June 3, 2015 - PRLog -- For the third year, the Miller Family YMCA of Newbury Park is offering a free, one-year membership to local eighth graders. Membership includes use of the fitness center, pool, multipurpose room, exercise classes and participation in teen events. Membership is good from June 15, 2015 to June 10, 2016.

         "This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to stay physically active, learn values necessary to avoid risky behaviors and obtain healthy habits that can last throughout their lives," says Katie Beck, executive director at the Miller Y. "Adolescence can be a challenging time for kids and parents. The Y provides a positive support structure.”

         Eighth grade members will meet with a fitness coach to learn about the gym, how to properly use the exercise equipment and set up a FitLinxx account, which enables members to monitor their workout progress.

         Members can also take part in special events including intramural sports, sleepovers and a movie/pool night.

         To sign up, teens entering eighth grade in the fall must present a school id and have a parent or guardian complete membership paperwork and sign a waiver. Once the paperwork is complete, the eighth grader can start coming to the Y beginning June 15. The membership includes three guest passes for use by parents or guardians.

         The program is funded by individual and corporate donations made to the YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign.
