CAMDEN, U.K. - June 2, 2015 - PRLog -- 2nd June 2015: Today, the Tavistock Square Memorial Trust releases details of their 2015 Memorial Lecture, the first of the two official commemorations to mark the 10th anniversary of the London bombings on 7th July 2005.

The former Secretary of State for the Olympics, Dame Tessa Jowell, will deliver the lecture on the 29th June, at the British Medical Association in Tavistock Square. She was also the Minister who provided continuing support to families and survivors over many years by co-ordinating resources across Government as she had done after 9/11.

In previous years, the lecture has benefitted from the support of and been delivered by Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, Lord Ian Blair QPM and Martine Wright, the Captain of the British Paralympic Volleyball Team.

In addition to the lecture, the Tavistock Square Memorial Trust is campaigning to raise funds to erect a memorial in Tavistock Square, the site most closely recognised with the events of that morning. This permanent marker will receive no public funding and will be entirely funded by donations. The Trust has already received donations of £36,000 towards their £100,000 target.

Dame Tessa Jowell comments:

"I am honoured and deeply touched to be invited to deliver this year's memorial lecture on the 10th anniversary of the bombings. The lives of the families who were bereaved were changed forever on that day as were those who survived with life changing injuries.

The memory of winning the Olympics and then the devastating terrorist attacks are forever intertwined in London's memory.

I also feel that a memorial in Tavistock Square will have great significance when people look back at the history of London, and will help bring comfort to those affected by those tragic events. There are so many things that are important to make the pain of loss in those circumstances even possible to endure, and one of them is to have a memorial as a place to visit and reflect.”

Philip Nelson, Chair of the Tavistock Square Memorial Trust, adds:

“We are grateful to Dame Tessa Jowell for agreeing to deliver our annual lecture. Following her work at the time providing support and help to families of victims, she remains close to many of them to this day. We are also grateful to those local businesses and individuals who have contributed towards the funding of the memorial we want to erect in Tavistock Square, which will provide a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives on the no.30 bus, and celebrate the courage and resilience of the survivors, the emergency services and those members of the public who did what they could to help. We are now calling on the support of the wider London community to give what they can to help us make this people’s memorial a reality.”

Note to Editors

The 7/7 Tavistock Square Memorial Trust was established in October 2012 with two key objectives. The first was to campaign for and erect a memorial in the north east corner of the gardens, at the site most closely associated with the events of 7/7, whilst the second, the 7/7 Memorial Lecture, was conceived to provide a lasting positive remembrance to all those who lost their lives across the four sites and to the courage of the survivors and witnesses and the emergency services.

The 7/7 Tavistock Square Memorial Trust is a registered charity – No. 1149388
