Follow on Google News | Whale Sharks Are Swarming Isla Mujeres, MexicoCitizen Scientists Invited to Help Protect, Preserve Whale Sharks
By: Ceviche Tours Every year the full moon in June signals the spawn of bonito and tunas in the water off Isla Mujeres. Large groups of whale sharks swarm the area in eager anticipation of the spawn, to feast on this bounty of the sea. “Whale sharks are flooding into the waters of Isla Mujeres. While a few days ago there were 20 whale sharks, today guests swam with 100,” said John Vater, co-founder of Ceviche Tours, an ecotourism and travel company in Isla Mujeres. Guests of Ceviche Tours can submit photos taken during their whale shark excursions to the International Whale Shark Registry at http://www.whaleshark.org. The Registry will track the whale shark, and when it is encountered again they will send updates about the whale shark’s location and where it has traveled. “It is a great way for the public to get involved as ‘Citizen Scientists’ in helping to preserve the marine ecosystem,” said Vater. The whale shark aggregation will continue through August as the fishes, corals and lobsters near and on the Mesoamerican reef spawn. This summer, guests can also attend the Whale Shark Festival July 18-24, 2015. Isla Mujeres is the closest land to the whale shark aggregation. It boasts more than 70 hotels and has activities for the entire family, making it an ideal place to stay for swimming with the whale sharks. This tight-knit community of fishermen and their families is home to the Mexican Navy, who ensures the safety of the area. Ceviche Tours offers private excursions and open boats for whale shark adventures as well as ground transportation from the Cancun Airport to the Island. Tours to visit the Mayan pyramids and the Yucatan are also available. Fully licensed divers and guides lead all Ceviche Tours whale shark excursions.
