AUSTIN, Texas - June 1, 2015 - PRLog -- Last week, Governor Gregg Abbott added dozens of counties to his emergency declaration due to flooding and heavy rains across Texas.  Countless homes and buildings have been damaged or destroyed by floodwaters and many others have suffered water damage due to leaking exteriors.

All of this moisture has residents on the lookout for mold growth in their homes and businesses and those with a weakened immune system should be extra vigilant.  One type of mold that is frequently found in water-damaged buildings is known as Aspergillus.  Although many people may be exposed to it without getting sick, people with weakened immune systems or lung diseases are at higher risk of developing health problems due to exposure. These may include allergic reactions, lung infections, and infections in other organs.

Aspergillosis is the name of infections caused by Aspergillus.  There are several different kinds of aspergillosis. One is known as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), a condition where the fungus causes allergic respiratory symptoms, such as wheezing and coughing, but does not actually invade and destroy tissue. Another type is invasive aspergillosis, a disease that usually affects people with immune system problems.  In this condition, the fungus invades and damages tissues in the body. Invasive aspergillosis most commonly affects the lungs, but can also cause infection in other organs and can spread throughout the body.

“Exposure to high levels of indoor mold is not healthy for anyone, but this is especially true for people with immune system deficiencies,” said Hollis L. Horner, President of Indoor Environmental Consultants, Inc.  “The very young, elderly, and others who are vulnerable to fungal infections due to other conditions or medications they may be taking should avoid exposure to contaminated indoor environments that may contain pathogenic fungi such as Aspergillus.  Fortunately, environmental testing can identify Aspergillus and other microbial contaminants so that people are not needlessly exposed to these hazards.”

IEC’s indoor environmental quality experts provide testing for Aspergillus and other types of fungal and bacterial contaminants following flood and water damage.  To learn more about this or IEC’s other building science and indoor air quality (IAQ) services, please visit www.iecinc.net, email ncancino@iecinc.net or call (877) 432-8378.
