Radiation or Surgery: Which is Best for Early Lung Cancer Treatment?

IRVING, Texas - May 29, 2015 - PRLog -- Treating early-stage lung cancer as soon as it is detected is critical for increasing survivability odds. The best course of action, however, still depends on the particular case in question, research is finding. In some cases, surgery may present the best option, but less invasive radiation treatments may have the best impact in other instances.

“The outcomes of using radiation and surgery for treatment of early-state non-small-cell lung cancer are both quite promising,” explains Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and leader surgeon at Las Colinas Cancer Center. “The best course of action, however, depends on factors specific to the patient. While non-invasive radiation may be the preferred treatment of patients and some doctors, it may simply be wiser to proceed with surgical intervention to increase long-term survivability odds in certain cases.”

Researchers have found that stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) can have positive effects on immediate mortality rates and toxicity versus surgical intervention. Over the long haul, however, surgery does deliver benefits that cannot be denied.

A recent study of 367 SBRT patients and 711 surgery patients all over the age of 67 provided some insights on the benefits and potential pitfalls of both treatment options. Researchers found in the short-term, radiation presented with lower toxicity rates and lower mortality rates. Over the long-term, however, mortality rates were lower in patients who presented with a higher life expectancy to begin with than their counterparts treated with SBRT.

Essentially, the study supports making patient-specific treatment plans based on a number of factors, such as patient age, health standing beyond the presence of lung cancer and anticipated life expectancy.

“Both treatments can be highly effective, but not in all cases,” says Dr. Echt. “The best lung cancer treatment options hinge on patient unique factors, making it critical for people to discuss all possibilities and potential risks and rewards with their physicians.”
