DENVER - May 27, 2015 - PRLog -- Choosing the right hunting blind can make the difference between bagging a trophy whitetail deer and/or great source of venison and wasting a hunting season. Plenty of hunters use tree stands, but many choose to go a different route.

Ground blinds offer benefits you just can’t find in most tree stands. Ground blinds are more comfortable, roomier and offer more reliable shelter. They’re also easier to enter and exit, and you never have to worry about falling out of one. Ground blinds for bow hunting, shotguns and rifles can also be used on public lands because, unlike tree stands, they do not damage trees, a practice prohibited on public lands in several states.

Hunters can choose from several types and styles of ground blinds, ranging from foraged materials on the low end to high-end polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fabric blinds. Each kind of blind has its plusses and minuses.

POLYVINYL CHLORIDE HUNTING BLINDS

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) fabric ground blinds combine incredible portability with the most robust fabrics and high-strength aluminum or galvanized steel frames on the market.

Pros: According to WeatherPort (http://www.weatherport.com/fabric_building/hunting-blinds/), a leading fabric building manufacturer, PVC hunting blinds are easy to install and securely anchor to any level surface with less site preparation than metal or wood blinds. PVC fabric is available in camouflage patterns and offers greater abrasion resistance and snow shed than polyethylene (PE) fabric. PVC blinds also offer greater strength and resistance to tearing, flapping and leaking than PE and canvas blinds. PVC blinds can also include proprietary insulation to any R-value of thermal resistance and are built to local code, according to WeatherPort.

Cons: PVC ground blinds are on the high end of the price scale compared to other building materials.

FORAGED MATERIALS

Creating a ground blind out of foraged materials is the least-expensive method of sheltering yourself during whitetail hunting.

Pros: Limbs, branches, brush and other found materials are abundant in natural settings. They’re also free.

Cons: These structures are temporary, can’t be moved, leak and don’t offer much shelter from snow and wind.

WOODEN HUNTING BLINDS

Using a wood ground blind offers several benefits over shelters built from foraged materials, but there are also drawbacks compared to other materials.

Pros: Wooden blinds are sturdier, provide more reliable shelter, can be customized with windows, doors and insulation, and they offer greater longevity.

Cons: These types of blinds generally lack portability and require annual maintenance or they will rot. Oftentimes they must be built on-site and are good only for use on private property. Modular wood blinds are difficult to transport.

METAL HUNTING BLINDS

Aluminum ground blinds and steel ground blinds provide more robust shelter than structures built using wood.

Pros: Metal ground blinds offer greater longevity than wood or foraged blinds. As with wooden blinds, they can be built to practically any size and include doors, windows, insulation and other customizations.

Cons: Metal ground blinds generally are permanent shelters suitable for use only on private property. They require annual maintenance and can rust and/or get dented. Most metal blinds need to be welded. Even modular metal ground blinds are difficult to move and must be built on-site.

CANVAS HUNTING BLINDS

Canvas ground blinds provide a lightweight alternative to wood or metal blinds while offering greater longevity than blinds from foraged materials.

Pros: These are highly portable ground blinds that also can be deployed for permanent use. Canvas blinds are relatively inexpensive and easy to install. They’re also available in several different size options.

Cons: Canvas blinds generally do not come with an insulation option. They’re less robust than wood blinds, metal blinds or PVC blinds. Canvas ground blinds can tear and/or leak at their seams and can require frequent patching and waterproofing. They can be difficult to securely anchor against high winds.

POLYETHYLENE HUNTING BLINDS

Polyethylene (PE) ground blinds have the same positive characteristics of canvas blinds but are still less than ideally suited for use in rugged environments.

Pros: These blinds are lightweight, highly portable and more robust than canvas shelters. PE blinds are easier to install than wood or metal blinds and require less maintenance than canvas shelters.

Cons: Polyethylene fabric is a notch below robust PVC fabrics for durability, meaning they rip, tear, leak or flap easier.

There’s plenty of information online if you’re looking to build or buy you first or next ground blind. As with any purchase, identify your needs, expectations and price range, and do your research.
