Everybody needs good neighbours, but the young don’t trust them!

May 25, 2015 - PRLog -- As with many things in life, such as knowledge and experience, it appears that trust is another factor that comes with age, as a new survey of UK homeowners shows young people are significantly less likely to trust their neighbours, compared to older people.

A trusting 90% of over 65s notify their neighbours when they are going away on holiday, compared with just 27% of 18-24 year olds, 28% of 25-34 year olds, 45% of 35-44, 54% of 45-54 and 68% of 55-64 year olds.

Urban dwellers also lack trust compared to those living in rural areas, as only 67% bother to tell neighbours they are going away, while 80% of rural residents do.

The survey of 2,000 homeowners, commissioned by Evander, the national locksmith and home improvement company, also showed that, when it comes to home security before going away, almost half of homeowners (41%) describe their attitude as ‘easy going’. This despite the most recent full year figures from Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) estimating that during the year ending December 2014, there were approximately 796,000 incidents of domestic burglary.

This tendency towards an easy going nature might explain why 58% neglect to put any garden ladders/tools out of sight and 45% don’t check if the garage/shed is locked.

And, nearly one in five (17%) fail to make sure doors and windows are locked before leaving for a holiday. In the past three years, 5% of homeowners say they have returned home after a period away to find that they had left a door or window either unlocked or open.
