May 23, 2015 - PRLog -- Importing a vehicle from UK to Kenya is quite easy and involves the following basic steps:

Choose the right vehicle for you and your pocket

Do you need a 4X4 or a small fuel efficient car for your day to day running? What is your budget? Generally for budgets over ksh 1.5m, it is wise to import directly from the UK. Uk currently is the number one supplier of diesel run cars in Kenya. Petrol based vehicles are generally imported from Japan. From smaller SUVs like Toyota Rav4s to the bigger 4X4s like the Toyota Landcruiser VX or Nissan Patrol, UK is the major source of diesel cars to Africa. Pick-up truks like the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Volkswagen Amarok, Mitsubishi L200, Ford Ranger are also obtained cheaply from the UK market. Heavy commercial vehicles like the Mercedes Actros, Mitsubishi canter, Iveco trucks, Scania as well as tractors and other farm machinery are sourced directly from the UK too.

Once, you establish the make and model of the car you want, get into the nitty gritty and consult with your export advisor on the history, mileage and condition of the vehicle. Remember that duty is also payable at the port of entry, so this should be ready before you make the import decision.

Purchase vehicle in UK

Liase with your export agent and send at least 50% of the CIF price to secure the vehicle. Remember that all monies have to be paid before the vehicle documents and BL is released to you

Shipping

Servicing and Inspection is done at the port of exit. This is mandatory, and any vehicle imported to Kenya without JEVIC or QISJ attracts hefty penalties from the relevant government authorities.  The vehicle is then loaded (RORO) to the vessel or put into a container and shipped. Average shipping duration from Tilbury port to Mombasa is 3- 4 weeks.

Clearance & registration

Just before the vessel arrives at the port of Mombasa, your vehicle documents and Bill of Laden (BL) are couriered over to you. Liase with your clearing agent and pay all the duties applicable. In Kenya , only cars that are 8 years and below in age are allowed. It is worth noting however, that the newer the car, the higher will be the import duty payable. Visit dutycalc.co.ke to calculate the exact amount that you are required to pay for your vehicle.

Demurrage is usually 10 days from arrival at the port of Mombasa. Vehicle Exports have a 26 days free demurrage facility. Please consult with the clearing agent.  In most cases, your vehicle should be out of the port within 4 working days.

Delivery

Please consult with your clearing agent on the mode of delivery. The car could be placed in a car carrier to your final destination or you could arrange to pick it up personally from the port. All our cars are serviced before leaving Tilbury port In the UK, so it’s just a matter of fueling the car and voila you are ready for a 500km trip to Nairobi or wherever your destination is.
