Rhinoplasty- Cosmetic Nose Reshaping

Rhinoplasty is one of the most widely practiced surgeries for reshaping and enhancing the aesthetic appearance of one’s nose considerably by making it larger, smaller or sharper.

May 22, 2015 - PRLog -- Rhinoplasty is performed worldwide to enhance the appearance of the nose making it look more at par with the entire face; however, there is a lesser-known fact to it too. It can also correct structural problems, which might result in serious health hazards including breathing trouble and chronic congestion.

The procedure

The surgeon makes small incisions on the nose in order to access necessary bone and cartilage supporting it. The incisions are made in the internal part of the nose with extreme precision, so that they don’t get visible easily. In certain cases, the surgeon might need to remove some bones or cartilage or might add some tissues based on the individualistic condition.

The tissues added either are taken from some other parts of the body or are supplemented by means of synthetic fillers. Once the reshaping and rearrangement of the bone and cartilage is done, the surgeon redrapes the skin and tissues on the surface of the nose. In the initial phase, a splint supports the newly created shape of the nose. Once the healing starts, the splint is removed.

Rhinoplasty (http://www.harleybodyclinic.co.uk/) is generally performed on an outpatient basis, which involves administration of local anesthesia. Only in a few special cases, local anesthesia is used when the patient needs to spend overnight in the clinic. Surgeons trained extensively in plastic surgery and otolaryngology (the branch of study dealing with ear, nose and throat) are qualified to perform Rhinoplasty.

After the surgery

For the first week after the surgery, the nose will be thoroughly bandaged with a splint inserted. However, both will be removed once the nose starts exhibiting normal healing.  For several days, the face will display puffiness and there will be considerable bruising and swelling in the regions surrounding the eyes.

There might be a little bit of pain too; one might use cold compresses to reduce it or the physician might prescribe a few pain medications. Most of the pain, bruising and swelling go within 10 to 14 days followed by the surgery. One is asked to keep the head elevated while sleeping and not to move it much for the first few days. Patients can resume normal lifestyle within the first couple of weeks; however, some need a little more time. It is recommended not to undertake strenuous activities at least for a month.

Risks and Complications

No procedure is completely free from risks and complications and so is Rhinoplasty. Apart from temporary bruising, the patient might also experience occasional bleeding, injured septum (Septum is the wall that separates nostrils), skin irritation (mainly caused due to bandaging), infection (medications are prescribed), and nasal blockage. Besides, general complication associated with anesthesia administration is also there.

However, such risks are much lowered provided the surgeon is highly skilled in performing the surgery.
