Follow on Google News | KTM Roofing Presents Attic Ventilation Options Prior to the Hot Days of SummerBy: KTM Roofing Because attics are often purposed for the storage of items that are rarely accessed or not used at all, the importance of ventilating this space is often underestimated. Attic temperatures, however, can reach 160 degrees on hot days, which increases the energy consumption of an appliance that is already the most expensive to run in structures of all types; the air conditioner. There are two ways to ventilate the attic: 1) A static system – A static ventilation system does not require electricity to power fans to circulate air throughout the space. Instead, the vents are placed at the uppermost ridge of the attic ceiling and along the eaves of soffits around the floor. As temperature rises in the attic, pressure in the space increases and warm air starts to elevate. The combination of rising pressure and warm air moving toward the ceiling naturally pushes it out of the vents along the upper ridge. To equalize the pressure that is being lost in the space, cool air from outside is drawn in to the attic through the vents around the floor. This type of system is self-regulating, meaning that as heat in the attic increases, so too does the rate of ventilation. 2) Fan-powered venting – Fan-powered ventilation may be required in attics where there is not a high ridge or putting vents in at the highest point of the attic isn’t feasible. In these situations a system of fans may be required to draw warm air and then vent it out. The process that draws cool air in through the lower vents to equalize pressure works in the same way as static systems. “An attic is typically the space in the house that is used the least by families, but it plays a major role in determining the amount of cooling required to keep the interior comfortable and can affect the performance of the roofing system over the long term,” said Tim McLoughlin, President and Founder of KTM Roofing. He seconded, “Adding ventilation to the attic can reduce energy bills and minimize repairs, meaning that a ventilation system can pay for itself many times over.” KTM Roofing has served Atlanta and its surrounding areas for over 3 decades. The company provides roofing solutions that are cost-effective, reduce energy demands, and are executed by certified master roofers for optimal results on residential, commercial, and historical structures. ### For more information about money-saving ventilation techniques and other roofing solutions, visit: http://ktmroofing.com/ Press release distributed by Gervais Group.
