TAMPA, Fla. - May 21, 2015 - PRLog -- The Pet Professional Guild (PPG) has partnered with esteemed veterinarian and animal behavior consultant, Dr. Lynn Honeckman, to sit on its Special Council and help in its quest to network with vets and promote the organization to the vet community at large.

PPG’s Special Council comprises an elite group of leading experts who endorse and support PPG and its Guiding Principles, and have a vast range of knowledge and experience to contribute in the ongoing education and engagement of force-free pet care and training methods industry-wide. Current members include luminaries such as Jean Donaldson, Dr. Karen Overall, James O’Heare, Victoria Stilwell, Dr. Jean Dodds, Jennifer Shryock, Joan Orr and Robert King.

“Dr. Honeckman has the respect and attention of both the veterinary community and professional dog trainers, which places her in a unique position to assist with community liaison between the two sets of professionals,” said PPG president, Niki Tudge. “It is and will continue to be one of PPG’s primary goals to help bring together veterinarians and professional trainers to benefit the welfare and education of the pet owning community.”

Dr. Honeckman graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1993 and is currently based in Orlando, Florida where she deals exclusively with behavior cases.

“I am very pleased to join the Pet Professional Guild, an organization that is committed to science-based, force-free training and behavior therapy for our companion animals,” said Dr. Honeckman. “As a general veterinarian who sees only behavior cases, I feel very passionate about helping to bridge the gap between the veterinary profession and the pet training world. It is critical that all veterinarians, pet owners and trainers work together to create a positive quality of life for every pet we choose to invite into our lives. My mission is to bring everyone together to help improve the lives of our pets through the prevention and management of all behavior problems.”

PPG’s Guiding Principles define force-free training to mean that no shock, pain, choke, prong, fear, physical force, physical molding or compulsion-based methods are ever employed in the training of or caring for a pet.

About Dr. Lynn Honeckman

Dr. Lynn Honeckman graduated from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1993, after undergraduate studies in biology, biochemistry, psychology and animal sciences. Upon graduation, she moved to the Chicago area working in private practice with small animals, exotics and wildlife rehabilitation. After four years she accepted a position as an associate veterinarian at New York's North Shore Animal League America, the largest no-kill shelter in the United States. While there, Dr. Honeckman witnessed first-hand the huge number of pet relinquishments every day due to behavior problems. It is currently believed that behavior problems are the primary reason for dogs and cats to be taken to a shelter. While working at NSALA, Dr. Honeckman worked closely with the shelter's training department along with New York area veterinary behavior specialists to rehabilitate these pets. During this full-time position, Dr. Honeckman also worked in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey at a small animal/exotic practice, continuing her experience with birds, reptiles, and small mammals.

Dr. Honeckman relocated to Orlando, Florida in 1999 and has continued working as a general veterinarian in the Orlando area. For the past 15 years, she has worked as the facility veterinarian at the Southeast Regional Campus of Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) located in Ocoee. She has continued to pursue her special interest in animal behavior by graduating from the Applied Clinical Behavior Medicine Course of the North American Veterinary Post Graduate Institute, both the general course offered in 2003, and the advanced courses in 2006 and 2011, taught by Dr. Karen Overall.

In 2011, Dr. Honeckman helped form the Central Florida Force-Free Trainers Network, a group of individual pet trainers who collectively support each other in a non-competitive environment with an emphasis on higher, science-based knowledge, and an absolute commitment to the education of the animals entrusted in their care through training based on positive, reward-based, non-aversive techniques.

Dr. Honeckman is a member of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior and American Veterinary Medical Association. For further information, see http://www.veterinarybehaviorsolutions.net/homepage.pml.
