Zayed Future Energy Prize 2016 Calls for Clean Energy Innovators Worldwide

Established by the government of Abu Dhabi in 2008, the Zayed Future Energy Prize has led the world by encouraging and rewarding achievements in renewable energy and sustainability. Winners of the prize have touched the lives of over 150 million people – generating over 190,000 MWh from renewable energy, reducing over 800 million tons of carbon emissions, providing safe drinking water to over 6 million people and introducing more than 350,000 people to sustainable solutions and management best practices.

Highlights of Zayed Future Energy Prize:

The total prize fund of US$4 million is distributed amongst five categories:-

·         Large Corporation : Recognition Award

·         Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) : $1.5 million

·         Non-Profit Organisation (NPO/NGO) : $1.5 million

·         Lifetime Achievement : $500,000

·         Global High Schools: $500,000, divided into up to $100,000 across five regions (the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania)

Each Category is evaluated based on four criteria– Impact, Innovation, Leadership and Long-Term Vision.

  Asia, recognised globally as the region with the fastest growing economy, is becoming increasingly aware of renewable energy resources. Vast data has shown thatapplaud-worthy efforts throughout Asia towards greening can be seen through the increase in energy generation from water, wind and solar and in terms of monetary investment. Recent development trends show a booming increase in the number of NGOs and SMEs solely dedicated to renewable energy causes while large corporations are taking initiatives to adopt the use of alternative energies.

Dr. Nawal Al-Hosany, Director of the Zayed Future Energy Prize said, “Innovation is a driving force for change – we need clean energy innovators to find sustainable solutions to the pressing global challenges facing the world today. The Zayed Future Energy Prize recognises leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and schools who strive for change.”

In 2014, India shone with Abellon Clean Energy and Kalkeri-Sangeet-Vidyalayaby taking home the prizesin the categories of Small and Medium Enterprise and Global High Schools respectively.

Mr. Adam Woodward, Director, Kalkeri Sangeet Vidyalaya said, “It is an incredible experience to have participated in the Zayed Future Energy Prize. This award is recognizing the efforts by schools, like us, who are trying to give back to society. This not only funds schools seeking to integrate energy efficient and environmentally sustainable projects, but also inspires future generations towards a more sustainable way of life”.

He added, “Our next plan is to install solar steam cookers in our kitchen. This will be linked to part of the current project whereby some of the excess hot water produced by the solar water heaters will be channeled to the solar steam cookers to provide preheated water. This water will then be used via solar steam cookers to cook the daily food.”

The Zayed Future Energy Prize 2016 calls for submissions from Asia’s leading clean energy innovators to recognise efforts worldwide towards addressing the challenges of climate change, energy security and the environment. From now until 22ndJune 2015, corporations and enterprises of all sizes are welcome to submit their application in the following categories: Large Corporation, Small and Medium Enterprise, Non-Profit Organisation, Global High Schools, and nominations for the Lifetime Achievement Award.
