By: Flanders Fire Company #1 & Rescue Squad “This is one of those fund-raisers that also provides an evening of fun for participants while giving people a chance to see our firehouse,” said Sue Scribner, chair of the event. “We like having people visit our firehouse and associate it with something fun.” Scribner, an EMS lieutenant, said there would be many trays in addition to the large prizes. The $10 admission includes a sheet of tickets to start bidding, as well as refreshments. “There’s something here for everyone,” she said. “And every purchase helps us do our job of providing fire protection and emergency medical services.” The Flanders Fire Company and Rescue Squad No. 1 provides fire protection and emergency medical services to residents and businesses in Flanders and, through mutual aid, surrounding towns. It is made up of about 75 members, all of whom receive training in fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials response, homeland security issues and emergency medical services. The fire company operates two fire engines, one tower truck, one heavy rescue, a brush-and-foam truck, two ambulances, a multiple-casualty unit and a mass decontamination unit. In addition, the fire company offers public education services including lectures, demonstrations, training and a trailer that safely simulates a smoke-filled home.
