Avionica announces satLINK MAX installations on business jets to meet FANS-1/A mandate

By: Avionica

GENEVA - May 20, 2015 - PRLog -- Business jets flying the North Atlantic airspace are benefitting from Avionica’s satLINK MAX satellite communications system, which is immediately available to meet the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Services performance requirements for Future Air Navigation System (FANS)-1/A and Air Traffic Voice services. The technology is in use on more than 800 aircraft worldwide, and now includes the most popular airliner ever, the Boeing 737 and 737 BBJ.

“The satLINK MAX is being seen as the leading ‘off-the-shelf’ solution for operators who are required to install and operate satellite voice communications on business aircraft to be able to operate in the North Atlantic,” said Anthony Rios, vice president of sales for Avionica, speaking from the 2015 European Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition in Geneva.

At less than 4 pounds (1.8kg) in weight, the satLINK MAX is the lightest Iridium satellite communication solution, making it ideal for business jets. The technology is in use on more than 800 aircraft worldwide, supported by existing supplemental type certificates (STCs) for Boeing 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and MD10/11 aircraft.

With up to four Iridium modems, satLINK MAX supports multiple voice and data services with a single dual-element antenna. Typical satLINK MAX SATCOM installations include two Air Traffic Service flight deck voice channels, one FANS-1/A datalink channel, and one voice and data capable cabin service channel.

In addition to enabling Safety Air Traffic Voice and FANS 1/A over Iridium, Avionica’s satLINK MAX could satisfy recent recommendations by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) for a Global Aircraft Tracking System by leveraging its four Iridium transceivers to simultaneously provide ADS-C position reporting augmented with Real-time Flight Data parameters.

Avionica’s recent FAA certifications of the satLINK MAX demonstrated compliance with the FAA’s Advisory Circular AC20-140B guidance for Air Traffic Services (ATS) Data Link Communication systems, including Controller Pilot Data link Communications (CPDLC) and automatic dependent surveillance -Contract (ADS-C). The satLINK MAX approval also established compliance to Advisory Circular AC20-150A guidance for ATS satellite Voice and its adherence to the stringent RTCA/DO-262A Minimum Operational Performance Standard required to support FANS 1/A over Iridium operations (FOI).

Avionica’s ground support products, airborne products, and flight data management services are highly regarded for their innovation, safety and affordability. With approximately 20 percent market share in the air transport sector, Avionica created a market for value oriented aerospace data equipment with the Mini Quick Access Recorder (QAR), the industry's first miniature data recording device. Avionica applies advances in technology, business practices and AS9100C manufacturing processes to create products that are twice as capable at half the weight.
