HERE'S THE REST OF THE STORY Nissan promised that the 2016 Nissan Maxima lives up to its "4-Door Sports Car" nickname when it revealed the all-new, eighth-generation sport sedan's design at the recent New York International Auto Show. Now the certified proof – and video testing highlights – are in and posted online for everyone to see. Called the "2016 Nissan Maxima Test Track Challenge," AMCI Testing was contacted as an objective, independent third-party testing organization to explore and certify differences in Buttonwillow Raceway closed course lap performance between the 2015 Acura TLX 3.5 (FWD) with Technology Package, 2015 Audi A4 2.0T quattro® Premium Plus Tiptronic, 2015 BMW 328i sedan and the 2016 Nissan Maxima SR. THIS IS HOW WE 'ROLL' When all laps were completed around the 1.8-mile Buttonwillow Raceway Park's West Loop, the new Maxima was clearly the fastest: Vehicle Seconds Margin (sec.) Described by company chairman, Carlos Ghosn as the "four-door sportscar" when it was officially revealed at the New York Autoshow in April, Nissan has now decided to pit its new car against a BMW 3 series and an Audi A4 Quattro to prove that the slogan was more than simply marketing talk. In controlled tests at the Buttonwillow Raceway in southern California the 2016 Maxima SR set the fastest lap -- 1:18.50 -- around the 1.8-mile West Loop, beating the BMW 328i by almost a full (0.98) second. The car also outperformed the Acura TLX 3.5L V6 Tech by 2.08 seconds and the Audi A4 2.0T Quattro by 2.71 seconds. PERFORMANCE MEETS EXPECTATION "We expected the all-new 2016 Maxima, with its re-engineered engine, transmission and chassis to do well, but frankly even we were surprised by the head-to-head test results against some very well-established luxury sports sedans," said Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America. What's more, each car's electronic driving aids -- including stability and traction control -- were deactivated prior to the challenge. And, to make things as fair as possible, the lap began from a 40mph (64 km/h) rolling ‘pace car' start rather than a static off-the-line start, a situation where four-wheel-drive cars often have an advantage. And as impressive as the results are, especially considering that the Nissan has front- rather than rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, if Nissan had waited longer to carry out its tests, it could have gone up against the latest generation BMW 3 series, which goes on sale later this year and is lighter and faster than its predecessor.
