SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - May 18, 2015 - PRLog -- May is Asthma Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of this chronic disease that can sometimes be life-threatening.  Asthma is a serious condition and has a major impact on the lives of many people who live in Puerto Rico.

Some reports have indicated that up to 19% of the islands’ population has been diagnosed with asthma at some point in time.  In fact, according to an asthma fact sheet published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the prevalence of asthma attacks is highest amongst Puerto Ricans.  Puerto Ricans have a rate of asthma that is 113% higher than non-Hispanic white people and 50% higher than non-Hispanic black people.

People who have been diagnosed with asthma, and those who suspect they may have the condition, should seek regular medical treatment.  Another important aspect to managing the condition is to avoid asthma triggers in the home, school or at a person’s place of business.

In Puerto Rico and across the Caribbean, one of the leading providers of environmental asthma trigger testing and consulting services is Zimmetry Environmental.  “Many people don’t recognize how many known asthma triggers can often be found in homes and other types of buildings,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental.  “Understanding one’s asthma triggers and avoiding exposure is crucial.  Some of the most common asthma triggers in Puerto Rico include tobacco smoke, dust mites, cockroach and pet allergens, mold, volatile organic compounds and even outdoor air pollution.  At Zimmetry we have dedicated air quality professionals that use the latest testing methods to identify both microbial and chemical asthma triggers and irritants so that those with asthma can avoid exposure to help prevent asthma attacks.”
