PALM DESERT, Calif. - May 18, 2015 - PRLog -- Rosamond, CA – Former Antelope Valley Press staff writer and editor, Karla Tipton’s second historical fantasy novel, Dangerous Reflections (ISBN 978-1502812377), a time travel mystery, has been named a Finalist in the Fantasy category of the 9th Annual National Indie Excellence® Awards (NIEA). These prestigious national awards, based in Beverly Hills, California, are open to all English language books in print from small, medium, university, self and independent publishers. Awarded since 2007, the National Indie Excellence Awards competition is judged by independent experts from all aspects of the indie book industry, including publishers, writers, editors, book cover designers and professional copywriters.  Dangerous Reflections follows the release of Tipton’s first romantic fantasy, Rings of Passage (ISBN 9781493600243), a historical time travel novel featuring England’s King Richard III.

Set in in present-day Pennsylvania and Edwardian London, Dangerous Reflections tells the story of Martie Harris, a university graduate student in psychology who inherits a magic wand and seeks to solve a mystery left in a letter by her dying grandmother. With the help of her former Ph.D. advisor, the dark wizard Marcus Cirksena, Martie time travels through the aid of magic and mirrors to London in 1910, where she attempts to save her grandmother by stealing the Philosopher’s Stone and its life-giving elixir from a handsome wizard named Alastor.

A fast-paced romantic adventure packed with alchemy, illusion and family secrets, Dangerous Reflections explores relationships and illustrates how our perception of others changes what we see, and ultimately feel, about them. The novel builds around a number of intriguing characters, whose motives are slowly revealed against the turbulent setting of magic and mysticism in turn-of-the-century England. Tipton develops a story notable for its dramatic descriptions and finely nuanced atmosphere and surrounds the reader in the world she has created, keeping the tension perfectly balanced all the way to the novel’s climactic finish.

“I’m honored to receive recognition from the NIEA judges for Dangerous Reflections,” said Tipton. “I’ve always been fascinated with historical fantasy and mystery, and am excited that this story, in which I strived to portray a feisty modern woman time traveling through time and falling in love with a powerful man of myth and magic, has received an award.”

A native of Barberton, Ohio, Karla Tipton earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kent State University. After graduation, she moved to the Mojave Desert in California, working at the Antelope Valley Press as a staff reporter and editor for 14 years specializing in rock journalism and historical feature writing. Tipton is currently employed as a software tester. Her first novel, Rings of Passage, a time travel romance set in medieval England, features the historical figure King Richard III. Her second romantic fantasy, Dangerous Reflections, includes mystery, time travel, and the occult and was released in January 2015.
