Panel of Education Leaders Claim Management as the Best Career Choice in Higher Ed

May 19, 2015 - PRLog -- San Jose, CA---Following the huge success of the PATHS 2014 program on leadership crisis in higher education, Open Doors Group and The League facilitated a webinar addressing the same topic on May 12, 2015 and were delighted to host six outstanding panelists in the field of education. All of them, leaders in higher education, emphasized the importance of commitment to leadership abilities that helps provide a deeper understanding of how education institutions are managed and run.

While Mark Nelson and Kathleen Radionoff talked about why, for leadership roles, it is important to hire for what needs to be done versus hiring for a job description, the huge take-away from Yesenia Avalos was the three Cs---Confidence, Commitment and Credentials that truly lead your path to leadership roles.

"Aspiring leaders should not be afraid to get out of their comfort zone, and sometimes fail.  Having a stretch-target can help," said Mr. Nelson, giving an example of how early in his career he aspired to become a college president, and using that benchmark he pursued opportunities that he otherwise might have never considered. Today, he notes, it is less about whether or not he ever becomes a college president, and more about the value and influence the goal had on the career choices he made along the path.  "Think big, start small," he says.

Showing up and willing to learn to do the job is part of the battle, but comes with huge rewards. Some of the panelists had started their career in the corporate world and moved into leadership roles in education, bringing with them a lot of skills and talent that enabled disruptive, sustainable change to outmoded trends. Mark McBride was one of those who successfully introduced disruptive change from print to digital media.

Iris Ingram who has both financial and management experience reiterated the importance of understanding the revenue cycle and cost structure of the institutions to which Ms. Radionoff couldn't agree more. Understanding broad business functions of the institutions is key to running institutions effectively.

Interestingly, two of the panelists, Ms. Radionoff and Alyson Indrunus had become "Accidental Academics" where they had stumbled upon academic roles only to discover that they truly enjoyed it.

The webinar ended with a few questions from the listeners where they were curious to know how you transition from industry to academia and if classroom experience was essential to get promoted. The panelists agreed that both are essential and that embracing failures and always focusing on and strengthening the weakest experience is what would help them be successful.

All panelists were enthusiastic about mentorship and all of them have agreed to be mentors in the upcoming summer mentoring program that runs from July 1 to October 31. An online interactive learning session entitled Accelerated Career PATHS for Higher Education runs from September 14 - October 24 and has an associated mentoring program November 1 - February 29.
