Hands Across the Sand Coming to Tybee Island on May 16th

SAVANNAH, Ga. - May 14, 2015 - PRLog -- MEDIA ADVISORY *******

WHAT: A crowd will join hands to form a line across Tybee beach in a local “Hands Across the Sand” gathering. It will be one of hundreds of globally synchronized events to raise awareness about the dangers of dirty fuels and the need to speed the transition to available, affordable clean energy solutions. The events are particularly critical this year as over 50 cities and towns along the East coast, including Savannah and Tybee Island, have passed resolutions opposing the Obama administration’s plan to open the Atlantic to oil and gas development. Also of particular concern to our state is the proposed Palmetto Pipeline, which would carry liquid petroleum products from refineries in the Gulf through five Georgia watersheds to a terminal in Jacksonville, Florida. Push Back the Pipeline will officially “retire” their pipeline model at the event and offer a last chance to sign its petition.

WHO: Citizens from Tybee Island, Savannah, and nearby coastal communities will be joined by the Center for a Sustainable Coast, and the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club. Push Back the Pipeline’s KC Allan & Tybee Councilman Paul Wolff will be among the speakers who will address the crowd.

WHEN: Saturday, May 16th at 12:00 noon (Media Check In at 11:30 am)

WHERE: Beach to the north of the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, Strand Ave.***VISUALS will include signage, citizens joining hands in a long line along the beach & the Push Back the Pipeline 60-foot pipeline model.

Background: Floridian Dave Rauschkolb founded Hands Across The Sand/Land in October 2009. Hands Across The Sand/Land is endorsed by national environmental organizations including Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Oceana, Surfrider Foundation, Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth, Gulf Restoration Network, and Center for a Sustainable Coast. In-kind supporters are Urban Paradise Guild and Blue Frontier Campaign.
