Brampton Physiotherapy Clinic Best Known for Shoulder Injury Treatment

May 13, 2015 - PRLog -- Frozen shoulder can cause movement of the shoulder to become severely restricted. Patients complain that pain is usually constant, worse at night, and when the weather is colder; and can make even small tasks impossible.

The exact cause of this condition is unknown and can last from five months to a couple of years or more and is thought in some cases to be caused by an injury or trauma to the area.

In frozen shoulder, there is a lack of synovial fluid, which normally helps the shoulder joint, move by lubricating the gap between the humerus bone and the socket. This causes the shoulder capsule to thicken, swell, and tighten because of bands of scar tissue that have formed inside the capsule. As a result, there is less room for the humerus bone to move within the joint, making movement of the shoulder stiff and painful. Diagnosis of frozen shoulder is the comparison of restricted space between the joint and humerus bone, to distinguish it from other shoulder problems.

The normal course of a frozen shoulder has been described as having three stages:

Stage one: The "freezing" or painful stage, in which the patient has a slow onset of pain. As the pain worsens, the shoulder loses motion.

Stage two: The "frozen" or adhesive stage is marked by a slow improvement in pain but the stiffness remains.

Stage three: The "thawing" or recovery, when shoulder motion slowly returns toward normal.

Physiotherapy treatment for frozen shoulder pain will include range of motion exercises to help increase the fluid within the joint and break up the adhesion's that have formed in the joint. The exercises will include movement in all possible directions for the shoulder such as forward flexion, side flexion (abduction), rotation and extension. Treatment for frozen shoulder will also include ultrasound to help break up the adhesion's, and heat therapy to relax the shoulder muscles.
